Unlike a conventional power plant, a BESS does not produce primary energy: <strong>It shifts energy through time and provides extremely fast responsiveness.<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Its importance is growing due to the expansion of solar and wind power generation, the need to improve the reliability of electrical grids, and the increase in industrial loads, data centers, and critical processes. In Texas, ERCOT reported <strong>16,656 MW of storage in 2025<\/strong>, compared to just 275 MW in 2020, which demonstrates the speed at which this technology is being incorporated into the electrical system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. What does a BESS include?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An industrial BESS is not just a battery bank. It typically consists of <strong>battery cells and modules, racks, Battery Management System (BMS), Power Conversion System\/inverters (PCS), Energy Management System (EMS), transformers, electrical protections, HVAC\/refrigeration, fire detection and suppression, communications\/SCADA and control systems<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A key feature is that it is specified using two different variables:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Power \u2014 MW:<\/strong> determines how much it can deliver instantly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Energy \u2014 MWh:<\/strong> determines how long it can maintain that power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>BESS 20 MW \/ 40 MWh = approximately 2 hours of discharge at nominal power.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This MW\/MWh ratio is critical to determining both the technical feasibility and the profitability of the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. Main types of batteries<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are several BESS technologies. BESS in Mexico<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mexico is entering a much more defined regulatory stage for storage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Regulations of the Electricity Sector Law expressly recognize the <strong>Electrical Energy Storage Systems (EES)<\/strong> and allows their participation, whether or not associated with power plants and load centers, in addition to considering them for certain transmission and distribution functions.<a href=\"https:\/\/sidof.segob.gob.mx\/notas\/docFuente\/5769155?utm_source=chatgpt.com\">Official Gazette of Mexico<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Furthermore, in April of <strong>2026<\/strong> The National Energy Commission published new administrative provisions for the integration of SAEE into the National Electric System. These replaced the previous provisions published in March 2025.<a href=\"https:\/\/sidof.segob.gob.mx\/notas\/docFuente\/5785045?utm_source=chatgpt.com\">Official Gazette of Mexico<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Current regulations stipulate, among other things, that until market rules are fully adapted, a storage system can be treated as <strong>It acts as a Load Center when it draws electricity and as a Power Plant when it injects it.<\/strong>. (<a href=\"https:\/\/dof.gob.mx\/nota_detalle_popup.php?codigo=5785045&amp;utm_source=chatgpt.com\">Official Gazette of the Federation<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This represents an important step forward for the commercial development of storage in Mexico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Particularly interesting applications in Mexico<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Mexican industry, I consider the following projects particularly attractive:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Solar + BESS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">to take advantage of surplus photovoltaic generation and shift it to hours of higher value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>BESS Behind-the-Meter<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">installed directly within industrial plants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Peak Shaving<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">to control demand and optimize certain components of electricity costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Industrial microgrid<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">combining:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>CFE\/Grid + Solar + BESS + Emergency Generator + EMS.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This architecture is particularly interesting for installations where a power outage can represent production losses far exceeding the cost of energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>5. Technical feasibility<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From a technical point of view, a BESS project is <strong>highly viable<\/strong>, but its design must be tailored to the specific application.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is not correct to simply decide:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe need a 10 MW battery.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The analysis should determine at least:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>MW required \u2192 MWh required \u2192 duration \u2192 daily cycles \u2192 load profile \u2192 electricity prices \u2192 interconnection point \u2192 transformer capacity \u2192 short circuit \u2192 protections \u2192 harmonics \u2192 temperature \u2192 degradation \u2192 availability \u2192 fire safety.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Degradation is particularly important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A battery gradually loses capacity as it accumulates cycles and ages. Therefore, a 15\u201320 year financial project must consider:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>State of Health (SOH), Depth of Discharge (DoD), equivalent cycles, Round Trip efficiency, annual degradation, augmentation and module replacement.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>6. Economic viability<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The correct question is not simply:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cHow much does a BESS cost?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>How much money does each installed MWh generate, save, or protect over its entire lifespan?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Economic analysis should consider:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>CAPEX<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Batteries + PCS + EMS + transformers + switchgear + civil works + engineering + interconnection + security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>OPEX<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maintenance + software + insurance + replacement + degradation + auxiliary consumption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And then calculate:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>NPV \u2014 Net Present Value<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>IRR \u2014 Internal Rate of Return<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Payback<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>LCOS \u2014 Levelized Cost of Storage<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But there is another frequently ignored element:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Cost of Downtime<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In an industrial plant, a power outage can halt entire production lines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If an interrupt represents, for example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>$250,000 in losses<\/strong>, Avoiding just a few interruptions can completely transform the ROI of storage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Therefore, for industrial clients, the analysis should include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Energy Savings + Demand Savings + Arbitrage + Reliability Value + Avoided Downtime + Ancillary Services \u2212 CAPEX \u2212 OPEX \u2212 Degradation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Executive Conclusion<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>BESSs are evolving from simple backup systems to become strategic electrical infrastructure assets<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Texas demonstrates this transformation: ERCOT went from <strong>275 MW of storage in 2020 to 16,656 MW in 2025<\/strong>, and envisions around 49.6 GW by 2030 in its capacity outlook.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ercot.com\/files\/docs\/2026\/03\/19\/2025-ERCOT-Annual-Report-Final-Single-Pages-March-19-2026.pdf?utm_source=chatgpt.com\">Ercot<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mexico is in an earlier but particularly interesting phase. The new regulatory framework of 2026 formally recognizes different forms of participation in energy storage and establishes mechanisms for its integration into the National Electric System (SEN). It even contemplates specific contracts with CENACE when these resources technically contribute to reliability, security, efficiency, or renewable integration.<a href=\"https:\/\/sidof.segob.gob.mx\/notas\/docFuente\/5769155?utm_source=chatgpt.com\">Official Gazette of Mexico<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The greatest industrial opportunity does not necessarily lie in selling batteries, but in selling reliability and energy optimization.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For an energy engineering company, the highest value proposition would be to structure the BESS as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Energy diagnosis \u2192 technical-economic simulation \u2192 MW\/MWh sizing \u2192 electrical engineering \u2192 interconnection \u2192 BESS supply \u2192 EMS \u2192 installation \u2192 commissioning \u2192 operation and maintenance.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this way, the customer doesn&#039;t simply buy a battery: they buy <strong>cost reduction, operational continuity, resilience, and strategic control of your energy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In terms of opportunity, <strong>Texas currently represents the most mature market for BESS monetization, while Mexico presents a particularly attractive growth window as the new 2026 storage regulatory framework is implemented.<\/strong><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) are transforming the electricity sector by optimizing energy management and providing industrial backup power.
